Constructed
in 1929, the historic Seattle landmark was intended
to house the Seattle Stock Exchange but was adapted
for office use after the stock market crashed the
same year. The building was designated as a Historical
Landmark by the Seattle Landmark Preservation Board
in 1990. During 1999 through 2001, the Exchange
Building underwent an extensive restoration, preserving
many of its historical elements throughout the
facility. |
| Parking |
Paid
parking is available at the Norton Building Garage
just south of the Exchange Building and in two lots
adjacent to the Millennium Tower on the block immediately
to the south (between Columbia and Cherry). Metered
on-street parking is available in the area and under
the Alaskan Way Viaduct. |

The
art-deco style building is L-shaped in plan and
occupies the entire northern end and half of the
west side of the block to the sidewalks, stepping
back at Floors 19 and 22. Floors 1, 2 and 3 are
partially below grade with floor 1 accessed from
the west at First Avenue and Floor 4 accessed from
the east on Second Avenue.
The
building is clad in flat and relief cast-stone and
bronze-colored relief panels with significant detailing
at the building entrances. Original wood double-hung
windows remain on the south elevation service areas,
and the original steel windows remain on the Floor
22 office penthouse and Floor 23 elevator penthouse,
and a number of the street level storefronts have
been altered; but most of the windows consist of
bronze anodized aluminum frame replacement units
with clear insulated glass. |
